You probably need to tear down the engine at least enough to inspect critical areas for wear, such as the valve train and bevel gears. I have heard that the bevel gears last an extremely long time and can be shimed to take up tolerances. Seems like you would not have to replace every part of your engine unless you just have to have everything brand new. Most of that 10K cost is in parts!

I dropped 5th gear at about 5000rpm, took out 4th, 3rd, mainshaft, layshaft, main drive gear. All new bearings in main case, new big end assembly, new oil pump, Ron Young did the work, added his own modified oil screen seal, re-shimmed all the lower bevel gears and modified the ignition pickups. While he had the bottom end, I did all new valves, recut seats, new rings, overhauled carbies. yep, if you had to fit new pistons and pay for all the labour, you could easily spend 10 grand if the job is done by a Ducati expert and all top quality component fitted.

once again yup. ive owned this bike since new (purchased mid 1977) I rode it daily till about 85 .done heaps of work on it inc. motor rebuild. had a family etc. it sat in my dads shed till 94. i had moved to qld-got it up there -got it going &rode it a bit. got divorsed & moved back to adelaide- my 20 yo son had it for 2 yrs (bad decision) i now have it back in adelaide and am doing a ground up resto. i am nearly 50 yo and have deep pockets (luckily) but only want value which seems to be sparing given the rise in new bevel owners.anyway ill keep going with the resto and have sourced a lot of nos parts from unusual sources and am aiming to have a 100 % orig 1976 ss very soon.paid $3150 brand new -just spent $1000 on wheel parts -go figure

cheers steve

Hey Steve
Did you see that Borrani 4777 18 inch alloy rim at fleebay last week go for AU$2400 ? so I'm not surprised you paid 1k for parts , I have bought a bike about a month ago that has all SS gear including two matching 4777 rims but its not an SS .
All I need now is some SS cases and frame and I'll be right LOL but where do you find them these days ?

Did a 77 / 78 come out with Bosch ignition or did that happen on the 79 / 80 SS ?

You will probably need a few trans gears at that mileage. The gears were prone to pitting the tooth faces and the dogs were none too tough. Usually 3rd and 4th gears show the most wear. I would also replace all the case bearings as a matter of course.
