ELECTROSPORT ESR510 REGULATOR WIRING

Post by jsey »

Hi All
I’m hoping that someone here has installed the ELECTROSPORT ESR510 voltage regulator on an 1981 900 SS. I’ve wired it according to the diagram provided. Green wire to the neg battery post, Red fused wire to the plus side of the battery, two yellow wires to the two stator output wires, white wire to the white coming out of the harness down by the fuse box that goes to the generator light on the dash. Black wire not used.
The problem I’m having is when the ignition key is turned on, the regulator get very hot and a small amount of smoke was produced I think from inside the regulator. I wasn’t quite sure where it was coming from. None of the wires seemed hot or melted. I may have fried the regulator on the inside or it may be defective. I am told by Electrosport that you can’t test the diodes on a MOSFET regulator the same as you would on a shunt type so I’m not sure where that leaves me. When I turn the ignition key on the red generator light does come on and only does so if the pink and black tracer wire coming out of the harness in and around the fuse box is grounded. What’s seems odd to me relative to the green wire from the regulator that attaches to the negative side of the battery is that there is no continuity between it and the bikes ground. Any and all help much appreciated.

I`m not familiar with the regulator you speak of. I have fitted aftermarket reg`s to both my bevels but was a long ways back. I think most people with a bevel would have aftermarket reg`s on them by now. Couple of things I do know are:
1. When the smoke escapes from any type of electrical equipment, especially solid state stuff, it`s generally fried. Some smart arsed friends of mine like to say the equipment needs to go back and be re-smoked, but you get the picture.

2. It does seem a little odd to me that the red goes to +ive, the green to -ive and the black is spare. While not always a hard and fast rule, it`s generally red to +ive and black to -ive. However the bike spare business is pretty global these days so it may not be applicable in this case.

I have just finished a resto on a 1954 Panther M100. Old 600cc single from a long gone British marque. It had the standard Lucas relay regulator on it which was still operational but known to fail. I decided to fit a solid state reg and hide it inside the old Lucas case for originality. Carefully hooked the reg up, fortunately using jumper leads and not damaging the original, to try it out and it wouldn`t charge. Contacted the vendor, included photos of my hook up, but was denied refund. Easily fried I was told by incorrect connection. Hope your vendor is more sympathetic than mine.............
