Hi there!

Got my Darmah back to work after 13 years of sleep in a garage. The gas tank was full of rust, the carbs were full of sticky stuff that was gasoline many years ago.....

Pretty clean for 13 yrs without use, I didnt think Darmah's after 80 came out with those mufflers !
Didnt they only come out with those on the 77/78 models ?

You are right. I think the Lafranconis were delivered until 1979.
I got those Lafranconis from the earlier model for cheap (about $ 25,-) about 15 years back. They sound and look much better than the Silencium mufflers - not as good as the Contis, though. The pair of Contis I own are not in good condition, but they deliver more performance. So, sometimes I will change.
Btw. - I purchased the '79 seat lately, because it looks better than the later version, too.

Hi Bruce,

40 mm Del'Lortos. Those 40 mm carbs are better than the 32 mm carbs in any manner stated the main german motorcycle newspaper "Motorrad" back in 1979.

the engine does not run as it should.

1. problem: pushing the carb pads does not cause gas streaming out of the pad - so, my thumbs keep dry. 13 years back at least the back carb flushed my thumb with gas.

2. prob: the engine does not start very good

3. prob: after idling about 1 or 2 minutes the upright cylinder starts the bang and 1 minute later the engine stops

do I just have a gas problem (much enough gas) or do I have to adjust the valves ? 13 years back the engine did bang while driving time by time, too. In my opinion I had to adjust the valves, but never did.

So, what is the problem here ?

When you say the Pad ? do you mean the trickle pump primer on a 40mm carb ?

If the fuel does not prime up it will be hard to start, was the engine running fine 13 years ago when you put her away or was there a problem back then?

Maybe you have a bad ignition module (transducer) that open circuits as it gets hot or your carbs are that much out of wack that they need to be synchronized

You did service the carbs with new gaskets and seals including the manifold spacer didn't you ?

Spass ? That is not fun - believe me ......

Yes - I am talking about the pump primer - sorry my English is not perfect.

The engine started very good 13 years ago, even when just one primer worked (flushed my thumb). I just kept both primers pressed the same time and it was o.k.. When driving the Duc 13 years ago, she time by time had this bang problem, but the engine did not stop.
I did not change any gasket - all (except one o-ring besides one idle screw) look perfect. The engine run first (as you could see on youtube). Even the manifold gaskets are fine. The ingnition should be o.k..

But - how do I know when to adjust the valves ?

Another point:

the swimmer (?) of the carb of the problem cylinder was bent unsymmetrically. I bent it back almost symmetric. Now I think it was bent, because the gas level in the carb is tilted as the carb is. May be that is the reason, why the primer does not work as before. And may be that is a reason too for mailfunction of the upright cylinder, because it does not get enough gas !?

Joe do yourself a huge favor and replace the manifold rubber spacers if these have become hard " and they would have " even though they look fine, they will suck air and this will throw your carby adjustment way out

I had the same problem last year backfire-ring etc mine was a combonation of 2 things the rubber spacers hard gone hard and therefor not allowing me to sync the carbs and the other was a cracked coil that would open circuit as it warmed up

The swimmer is the float , now if you problem is simply that one cylinder is flooding because the float is bent this could also give you the same problem

Try this start the bike warm it up and wait until it starts to play up
stop the bike and take the spark plugs out and have a look if one is wet

Either way take both floats out and straighten the bent one so that it looks like the other one refit them adjust your float level , look it up in Steve manual on his site and go from there

If I was you I would still remove both carbs and at least give them a good clean out

Dont worry about Valve adjustment until you have her running and idling on her own , Valve adjustment are shims on a Desmo they can not change on their own.

Limburg is a province in the Netherlands (where the cheese comes from).
