the ''nos'' myth

Post by nottonight68 »

anyone else out there sick of stuff being hawked as nos---and its not

any examples---
early ss hard brake lines-turned up gold in colour&bigger nipple nuts, clearly reproductions
-i dont have a problem with bits being described as repro's or replacements
but nos to me means exact----bev hev is pretty good but beware other sites offering nos without detailed pics-and then beware
am i on my own and just a fussy old fart-but i am trying to rebuild my 76 exact-?
i'm sick of paying for stuff thats 'nos'-and its not

+1

More than a little disapointing to open up that NOS parcel to find something that is obviously a reproduction.

Don`t have a problem with a rear chain connector link, when you see one for the front chain I`d be worried.[/quote]

When only NOS will do, ask for OEM

Post by DesmoKid »

As with most people, I have been stung by the NOS descriptor. Since NOS means New Old Stock, it can, and does, mean any old stuff that hasn't sold and is therefore not secondhand. All reproduction parts can be described, and are, as NOS if they are haven't sold and haven't been used. Treat NOS as meaning Not Secondhand and you can avoid the trap. A genuine replacement part is also not necessarily EXACTLY the same as the original part as supplied by the manufacturer. The trick is to look for OEM parts, where OEM means original equipment by the manufacturer. But OEM on its own includes secondhand parts so what you really need to insist upon is NOS OEM parts. Good way to make friends and influence people....
