At 90,000 if you're doing a rebuild, I think you'd be mad if you don't. If it hasn't happened, it's about to.

yup,
thats what im thinking-hate to put it all together then have it drop its lunch and have to start again.
at this stage its a cash issue, take a few months to get cash together-guess i'll be working instead of tinkering for a while

90,000 km on the bottom end doesn't seem like that much to me if the oil has been changed regularly, filters on the carbs and you haven't raced it or revved the nuts off it. These bikes are pretty tough.

Unless you're separating the cases anyway why bother if the bike was running smoothly before you started the rebuild.

for what it is worth ,i am just about finished putting my s2 engine back
together after a total strip down, its done 74,000 kms has not got air filters
and previous owner rode it very hard, bike had regular oil changes.
took crank to gowanlochs to be inspected and fearing the worst $1100
needs new pin and rods answer, but instead was told big end all
in great working order no sign of needing replaced yet,so i suggest
its worth getting crank split if the cases are apart and getting the good or bad news.
each engine must be judged on its own merits, and their will be tell tale signs
on the cylinders walls if the bearing is on its way out, even if the engine is quiet.

mines original ducati, vee two unit would be more robust.i'm wondering how many k's your original did probably not 103
how many kms has your thing done-ive only seen or heard of a couple that have racked up 100,000
who's got the highest documented mileage bevel

i bought the thing off a good friend of mine who bought it with 26k on it.It has now got 29k(has been round the clock).the mechanic found it hard to believe it had done those miles.we do not know when big end was fitted as when he purchased the thing(ssd) he was offered it with ss motor or drama motor.so its 103(over 14yrs) that we know of.he has run pennziol sae 50 and then penrite. i have just finished reassembling it after weeks of f** shims and dial gauges and micrometers and bitburgers.

did you get a pic of speedo at 99,999 -that would be one for the pool room.
so you've got 129,000 kms-any advances on that?
