Removing 900 SS Engine From Frame

Post by jsey »

Hi All
I thinking that this winter I will have my 1981 900 SS frame powder coated. The question that I have is whether or not the engine can be dropped out of the frame in it's whole condition. Anybody have any first hand experience doing this? Thanks

Hi Jonathan, remove exhaust and carbs, cut zip ties from electrical (alt and pickups) and unplug. Remove clutch cover as well as alternator cover and sprocket cover most likely as well. use a sizzer jack under the motor, all 3 nuts off engine bolts, remove rear/upper bolt then remove front engine bolt. lower motor and have a helper to remove rear/lower engine bolt.

It is really MUCH easier to block the motor and use an engine hoist to lift the chassis up and off the motor. Especially if frame is stripped bare.
