Clutch Won't Disengage

This may be a dumb question, but after rebuilding the bottom end of my 1978 900SD, the clutch started to become unable to disengage, I removed the clutch basket from the bike and everything looks good. Something strange though, with the clutch off the bike and the bike in gear, operating the kickstarter, the back wheel is turning. I forget what the inside of the crankcase looks like as it's been a while, but it seems to me that this should not be happening with the clutch removed.
