1981 900 SS COUGHING AT START UP

Post by jsey »

Hi,
I started my 1981 900 SS yesterday. It hadn't been started in some time. It fired right up but I noticed that just off of idle, once the choke had been released, that it was sort of hesitating and coughing. In order to stop it I had to engage the choke again. It sounded like the front cylinder. Then I noticed that the front cylinder was running noticeably hotter. When I shut it down and pulled the plugs it was confirmed that the front plug was quite a bit hotter than the rear. I was running NGK BP5HS plugs. I'm running 40MM PHM's with a choke. 150 mains, 60 idle jet. I need to check the needle not sure what it is. Regardless, I did check the valve clearances. .004 Intake and .006 exhaust. Closers were all nil with just the ability to rotate them but couldn't get a .001 feeler in there. Intake manifold gaskets are all new and fastened down.

Must be a clogged passage way in one of the carbs, a bad choke seal, or the Bosch ignition???? some time ago I did change the Bosch pick up wires to the type that Steve here at Bevel Heaven sells. Assuming the pick ups haven't moved, anybody here ever experience reliability issues with the Bosch ignition? Thanks
