Spark Plugs

Can anyone shed some light on how to tell what spark plugs the different square case engines use. The reference guides list two types of plugs. In NGK they are BP6HS and B6HS, the P standing for projected nose cone. In the Bosch guide they list an 860 GTS as using the B6HS equivalent, while the 900 GTS uses the BP6HS equivalent. What did Ducati change that required the different plug design? How can I be sure I’m using the correct one? How can I tell if I have a 900 or an 860 GTS?

If you're talking about engine capacity, they are all 864cc's.

No I'm not. I want to know why they changed to a projected nose spark plug. What did they change in the engine / ignition designe that required this? How would you positively identify which plug your bike should run?

Hello again Colin,I have checked my listings which only show the pantah engine as using projected nose plugs, all bevel drive listings that I have refer to NGK B6HS or B7HS,I currently use B7HS,these equate to Champion L86 or L82 or Bosch UA7 or W4A2,MIKE

Hi wrinklygit,
According to the Bosch application chart there are two types used. The W6BC is the projected nose cone plug. The other factor is the range of spark plug gaps, from .5mm through to .8mm. As my bike is a 900GTS I would like to know why they have recommended the W6BC, it was running W7AC (L86) plugs when I bought it, and still is. They seem to work OK, but I’m just curious as to what changed the specs.

The same thing happens with Laverdas, the Germany gurus recomend
the projected tips and the rest of the world does not and there does not
seem to be a reson.

Colin,
Looking at the list of types and plugs in your message, the question also is what gap to use.
I mean, my Darmah is a 900 SD (and ofcourse 864 cc). I currently have the W7BC plugs in with a 6 mm gap and everything seems fine. Should the gap be 8 mm?
Or am I missing something?
