860gt ignition

Not sure if this is a premature strike on a problem my bike doesnt have, but I was wondering what other folks do when the stock ignition fails on an early (1975) 860gt?? I know they have been known to. My bike has 32k and some change on the clock and runs quite well--is there an aftermarket alternative? Thanks in advance.

I'm about to start a 76 SS restoration, when I first got the bike this was on my hot to do list as I wanted an ignition system that I could rely on, out with the old in with the new, I know that there was a conversion kit available in the early 80's for them and started to hunt around for one , I ended up finding on Fleebay of all places AU$350 later and it was mine , this was for the base plate and rotor only the pick -ups are from a 94 Monster as are the coils. The end result will be a much nicer power curve compared to the old Ducati Electronica

You can also go for the old Lucas Rita kit again if you can find them that is
I have been told that someone here in Australia overhauls and Modd's them but I dont know knew that is
There are also kits like Moto Witt ignition DMC/2 , Steve used to stock them but doesn't anymore , there a few other kits out there if you care to google and spend some time finding them ,

Silent hectik are another but are fairly expensive. The DMC appears probably the best value for money. They were about $750 Canadian dollars a while back. You can also have the old ignish generators rebuilt. This is a cheaper option and they seem to be more reliable after that but your still stuck with that single step spark advance.
It`s worth checking your engine stop relay is not the culprit first. The failure of these causes symptoms not unlike failed stator ie: running on one pot below 3000 RPM. It`s in your head light, just disconnect and start her up. You have to stall her to stop as she`ll just keep running after you shut her off.

If the system is working, Play it safe and run your plug gaps at about .020" to reduce the voltage required to produce a spark.But the real solution is to replace it with something more reliable.

I did some more searching and came up with another system not mentioned. As I become more obsessed with this bike, I am looking for ways to retain stock appearance but have much more reliable performance. The bike runs great, as I said, but when and where "it" happens is always in the back of my mind. Anyone have reviews or comments on this set up? The details of installation seem very straight forward- though it doesnt have the advance curve silent hektic does, or DMS for that matter. I like the simplicity and the price. Thanks again-

Or you could always go for one of these units , they make a stator plate and rotor to suit

Not too badly priced at the moment either.
They do a starter motor version to, which is handy.
