I have a NOS reflector and as you are finding out they are becoming hard to find , I gave it a clean not so long ago and the chrome is like brand new --no water marks-- wont be letting it go though

There are some interesting comments here regarding chrome vs silver vs aluminium vapour + glass coating:

http://groups.msn.com/AntiqueAutoMusher ... rsion.msnw

I chromed an old damaged Darmah bosch reflector some years ago and use it now. Comparing the light intensity across two Darmahs, I think the reflection percentages for chrome are a little conservative (probably depends what sort of chrome, too, I'd imagine). What is noticable is that chrome gives a bluer light than silver (white/yellow). Having said that, it's perfectly adequate with the standard H4 bosch halogen.

As an aside, the Darmah Bosch headlight is the same as some BMW's and Monsters, so you can actually still buy a new "optical kit" which is everying but the black back shell - but you'll need to handover an arm and a leg for one. I bought one about 4 years ago that is safely stashed away for when the inevitable stone in the lens happens. Wish I could say the same for a 750 sport Aprilia setup!

That is an interesting site. You can include Laverda triples in the headlight list as well. I originally got onto this thread looking to find a way to separate an Aprilia lens from the reflector to get the lens re-silvered but I haven't had much luck yet.

macdesmo,

My 750 Sport has the Aprillia 35964 headlight with a parking light. Can't definitely say if it is original or not, though it appears to be. So I'll be interested in hearing if you get an answer to your query, and if it works, so please post it up when you get an answer and/or do the job.

Glad you liked the site. There's lots of interesting stuff out there on car restoration sites.

Laverda triples noted. Haven't had a ride on one of them since about 1981, and my feet barely touched the ground (and I haven't grown any (vertically) since then!).

Machten,
Your sport headlight is exactly the same as what I am trying to restore. I have seen a lot of nicely restored bikes with less than ideal reflectors. If there is a solution to this I bet a lot of people will be interested. I owned a 750 Sport and raced it at Lakeside in 1974 and it was a fantastic bike but I liked the 900 I replaced it with better.

Thanks for that!
I wonder what the glue was? I also wonder where you get this stuff. Can I go down for terrorism trying to buy this gear ? Regards,
Ian

its a chlorocarbon-paint stripper-it disolves organic glues
who knows what the glue was
very dangerous
need to experiment with readily available products
we are geting closer to a solutoin
