To Part Out, or Not to Part Out...

Post by JPZ860GT »

I have a '76 860 GTE bike that is 95% restored. I know, lots of people say that, but it's truly that far along. Even so, I don't have the time or interest in getting it done. And, from my research here and on e-Bay, it would appear that I can get a bit more money parting it out than I can selling it whole. Yes it will take time, but I don't mind. I buy and sell other items on e-Bay all the time, and can do a combination of selling here and there. These bikes as complete just seem undervalued. Agree or disagree?

Uhhgg... Dont part it out. If its that far along I bet you could get at least 4K for it in one lump sum. As apposed to parting it, which will take twice as long and be ten times the hassle. Trust me, I have done it. My rule of thumb at this point is if the bike is complete or close to it, or original and close to it, I sell as a whole. Its far better than parting. And to lovers of vintage bikes, its just a better way to go. And just to be clear, I have never parted a Bevel, nor will I ever part a bevel.

Don't part it out, find someone who does have the time , desire etc to finish it up and turn it over to them. Sell it, give it - whatever. Find something else to make money off of that is less scarce. It's not like there are a million of these bikes around.

I can appreciate folks wanting to see it kept intact, but keep in mind that parting it out could put multiple bikes on the road. You said it, these bikes are scarce, and that includes spares. I'm pretty confident that I can make an additional $1K by parting out. I can deal with the time and effort that it takes to make an extra $1K. Giving it away is not an option -the whole reason for my original post is that I need the money and wanted to know how to make the most money. Also, I just don't have the time needed to finish it. I can, however, swing bits of time here and there to sell off the parts to a good home. Again, don't look at it as one bike out of the population, look at it as putting multiple bikes into the population. I've already got a local cafe-builder chomping at the bit for my front-end.

Take what I am going to say below lightly but......

....you will not get any sympathy here regarding the "need for money" justification for parting out a perfectly good bevel drive. It is just plain WRONG to do so in my opinion and most other people here and, do not plan on using this forum to list any parts for sale to accomplish your stated goal.

Parting out a perfectly good bevel drive is wrong, no matter what the excuse. It should never be done.

Parting out a worn out bevel drive could possibly be justified with the "..so others may live.." mantra, possibly.
