I have an '81 Darmah engine in an Alchemy frame, it goes like stink but the engine sounds like it is going to fall apart at any time. (I've just bought this thing and am enjoying it before the rego runs out in a couple of weeks, I'll do some fault finding then if it lasts that long).
The noise is not a knock but a whirring rattle if that makes sense. It does not change under load. I suspect the starter equipment as it is really bad when the engine stops and the sprag clutch? or whatever releases.

Any ideas what is going on here?

If you are hearing it on the left side of the engine it could be a loose crank gear or the clutch hub is loose.Inspect both before using it,it can cause very expensive damage.
