1982 900SS ratchet sound?

Taking apart a 1982 900SS that made a sound similar to holding the kickstarter down while the engine is running. I have it down to the cases and still see nothing out of the ordinary and no excessive metal shards. Has anybody else encountered this? The kick starter still works but it sounds like it never releases - only louder.

Cases are open and I found a slight divot on the kickstarter sprag lug where it engages the receiver in the case. I will replace the piece and hope for the best. Everything else looks perfect.
