Can someone post how the engine breather hoses attach to and from the oil catch tank on a 76 SS ,where does the out hose go to ?

Martin, the parts catalogue says the vent hose L=440. I assume that is mm, which is a little less than 16 inches. Look at the photo on pg. 69, top right, of Original Ducati Sport & Super Sport (black cover). Looks like the vent hose routed over the cam support to me, but the only photo I could find that bears this out. Jordan

Jordan , what parts manual are you looking at ? its not in the data section , might have to go and buy a full part cattle dog for future references

when 76 ss came new they had 32's fitted with air filter boxes mounted to the frame (thats what the extra lugs are for)a hose ran from exit of thingy to the rear air filter box--when 40's fitted and air filters removed the exit hose was removed--vent into open air

so the catch tank is still used as per normal and just a breather is fitted to the out hose ? I got that right

Looks like Steve has you covered here. The parts book I have is just a copy. Steve A. has them for sale in the shop section. Check out that pic on pg 69 of the Falloon book, looks like 40m carbs and the hose is just hung there to flap in the breeze, very interesting.

My 77 SS has a "BreatherBox" located under the rear of the seat and the exit hose was vented to the front cyl. air filter box.In the end was a cute little flapper valve to try to keep the engine from inhaling too deeply and pressurizing the crankcases when the pistons are near the bottom of their strokes. In normal street usage an open vent causes no problem but at extended high revs it can push a fair amount of oil out the breather.When I started racing mine I put a reed valve in so the cases could only exhale and in 20+ yrs. of racing it I never had more than a few teaspoons of oil in the catch tank.

On my old 76 GTS I just ran the hose up under the tank and cable tied a rag over the end of the hose. It`s never spilled a drop in many a year. Hey, sounds rough as guts I know but seems to work a treat. Mind you the old girl don`t see red line too often and the rings are tight so no blow by to speak of. Cheap and cheerful. I do however change the rag regularly(maybe once a year) and I do use high quality rag. I think hooking it up to a breather box gives negative pressure in the crank cases which in turn will help inhibit oil leaks elsewhere.
