what engine have i got ?????

Post by desodero »

purchased a 1984 900 s2 last year
vin badge numbers and frame numbers match
it is a wet clutch engine,it has a spin on car type oil filter which from
the box suits a pantah, the engine number going by mick walkers restoration
book denotes this is a six dog gearbox,i thought these bikes had the three
dog gearbox,i have not pulled engine apart yet,i have only seen pictures
of s2 with wet clutch with cartridge oil filter,i wonder do i have a engine
with different lh &rh crankcases,am a first time ducati owner so knowledge of
ducatis is zero, any enlightening input would be appreciated.
or is this what you call a basket case

I got an S2 from 83 (before the spin on oilfilter) and it have the 3 dog gearbox, and as far as I remember all engines after 82 got the new gearbox.

It might have something with the engine numbers.

At engines with "kickstart only" the 3 dog box gearbox came around engine number 092920.
At the same time the 3 dog gearbox also came in electric start engines

For S2 electric start and electric start combined with kickstarter the engine numbers start with 907000

At the same time the "kickstart" only have engine number 095700

Your engine proberly have both kick and electric start, so it should have the 3 dog gearbox and engine number higher than 907000.

The most information is from "Ducati Super Sport" by Ian Falloon

hi per thanks for info,my bike has engine no 907*** but is electric start
only with no provision for kickstarter,i will find out when i overhaul
engine what is in gearbox,my main concern is with oil filter as bike has
bearing /crank pin set up, not split white bearings or high pressure
oil system, all pictures i have viewed for 83/84 bikes show a cartridge filter
bike also has oil level sight glass on rh cover
will try to buy ian falloons book as sound useful

From my point of view, You got a 84 S2 with 3 dog gearbox (better and stronger than the 6 dog).
Only difference (I think) from the 82-83 is the the spin-on oilfilter and oil level sigth glass in the rigth crankcase, but then again as Ian Falloon write i his book:
"When it comes to categorisation of Ducati bevel twins, 1984 is the most difficult year, and the 900 S2 epitomised these inconsistencies"

The books ISBN number is : 1 85960 672 5

per you are 100 percent correct with engine numbers and stating gearbox
is a three dog, went back to mick walkers book he has listed engine
numbers starting as 092920 being first three dogs, instead of 90****
as you have shown, you now have solved one piece of my jigsaw.
information about oil filter makes sense for bike,as engines were rapidly
changing into 1985
thanks very much desodero
