Steve,
I have followed the prices of the bevel supersports for sometime now, namely since 1975 when I first bought a new 900ss. At that time it cost me just under half of my gross annual income. By 1992 they had been selling for approx $10,000 or a quater of my gross annual income.Come 1976 they had risen to $18000 or 40% of wage. I had realised then that they were following the price trend of classic cars so I sold a '78SS, a GT 750and a Superlight and got the SS and a 916, both of which I still have.

Since then the other bevel SS machines have followed this trend. The $10,000 that I got for the '78 had increased to $17,0009 (30% of wage) in Mar 2006( 60%) and on to $35000 in July 2008.

The '75 model commanded $29,000(50%) in Dec 2005 and if one is available it should be around $58,000 or the same doubling as the 78 model. If you look at an '82 900SS they were around $8,500 in Dec 2005 and in June 2007 rose to $15,000 ie the same recent doubling over a similar period as the '78 models.Watch the 916's for interest as they have halved over 10 years! Condition is critical to price with all of this, obviously!

I haven't got figures for the GT's or the Sport but I am almost certain they are doing the same. So, I think the SA 900ss is worth about $45,000.
I know that is a lot but it is all relative. Another way to look at values is to compare marques at different times, ie look at the relative prices and how they change with time. A comparison with Vincents doesn't make $45,000 look a lot, just out of the league of most of us.
I hope this is of some help/ Regards,
Ian

Well informed response from Ian,thanks. So what does everybody think about some rough figures on a clean low k '84 MHR.I'm considering selling mine and may also sell my '77 900SS,these bikes are in Japan with me now and I'm tossing up whether or not to bring them home (to Australia)with me or not.
Cheers Craig.
(steve before you ask;the passenger does not come with the SS)

Are the prices you are referencing in US dollars? The 77 900ss that I had for sale in the post a couple below this is now sold. I sold it to a collector in the US and the selling price was $20,000. Hope this helps. At least it is a data point for what is happening here. By the way, the bike was on ebay and did not make the reserve there. Also there is a 750 green frame that has about a day left and it is up to $40,000 US dollars. That bike has been repainted, my bike was all original paint. I am under the impression that original paint bikes are more desirable, but maybe not.

Your info is interesting! The prices are a problem to compare with Australian prices as we were up to near parity with the USD 4 weeks ago. So that made the 77 a good buy, but 2 days ago with the fall in rates the bike would have been AUD $32,000.
If I was over there I would get the Greenframe at that price. Thanks for the info. Regards,
Ian

it would seem imaculate 900ss's are selling for around 28-30k in oz
this excludes the75 which now seem to be out of range for anyone but collectors-pity that-you may never see a 75 on the road again
i love the Hunters &Collectors but hate the collectors& hiders

The green frame on ebay US has not hit reserve at 40k USD,the seller also says only a LOT of money will come between him and the bike,it could, and I think does, have a big reserve on it.
My MHR and SS that I originaly brought up in this thread are now sold.I can't figure out how to post images but I believe Steve may have a tasteful image or 2 of my SS he could share.

At these prices its tempting to sell my '79 SS. I've been too busy to use it much over the last few years and it has had a few minor but irritating problems that I have had trouble trying to find the time to address.

I took it for a brief ride last weekend, though, and all is forgiven - at least for the time being!

The Greenframe and 900ss on e-bay right now have interesting bids, especially when you covert to our third world currency. I think one bidder is on both of them.

Greenframes are going for stupid money in the US, any greenframe in good condition will go for 75K plus (US$), if it can be documented as legitimate...A first year 860 motor (1975) 900SS or a 75 750SS will likely fetch in the 30s, and a 1976-78 900SS will likely fetch in the mid 20s. 1979s and later will likely fetch in the high teens to low 20s. That seems to be the market now, however given the financial meltdown experienced recently, I think we will see some moderation in these prices, especially for the less desireable bikes. As stated above, the sad thing about the run up in prices is that anyone paying these amounts will not likely be running the bike on public streets much, but perhaps we will start seeing people who own the real thing have copies made just like they do with jewelry, i.e. you wear the copy in public and keep the original locked up in a safe....

Unfortunately with the cost of parts and labor, it would cost as much to make a copy than the real thing, esp. if you paid to have it built for you. Would be nice to see prices of spare parts come down in the private market. :)

I've always considered the 78 to 80 models to be functionally the best of the lot but then again I suppose I'm biased.
