Re: Valve shims and seals
Many thanks. wdietz186, are the retainers you mention the small c-shaped colletts that hold the closing shims in place?

Valve shims and seals
Hi, I had to re-seat the valves on my Darmah and now the clearance between the opening rocker arm and shim has changed. Intake valve now .003 and exhaust virtually nil (haven't checked other head yet). Can I sand down the shim myself, and if so any pointers on best technique and what # grit to use ...

Re: Mainshaft / Layshaft
Hours of fun, indeed. Thanks for the reply. If I don't have it right, is it a question of repositioning the shifter hub? I haven't removed any cogs off the shafts, etc., so I'm fairly certain they're ok. Thanks again.

Mainshaft / Layshaft
Hi all, I believe I have the transmission right, but wanted to know if there's any procedure or test to make sure I do before I put the cases back together? I'm assuming there's only one way the shifter hub goes back in place with the shifter forks in the the right grooves, but maybe I've been wrong ...

Re: Stuck Cases?
Hi again, I've been trying different degrees of turn with the kickstart, but this is as far as I can get the cases apart before it sticks. Lots of play at the front of the cases, but the back doesn't want to budge. It feels as though something in the gearbox or with the starter mechanism is ...

Stuck Cases?
Hi all, I had to split the cases on an SD 900. I knew you needed a quarter turn or so on the kickstarter when plying them apart, but as I had to do a fair bit of handling to coax them apart I think I may have broken the seal without engaging the kickstart. The cases came 1/2 inch apart, but that ...

Re: Splitting the cases
Do you mean these bolts here? They're out. But roughly where is the bolt to the rear of the crank?
Thanks
Thanks

Re: Splitting the cases
Five10mm bolts? Are these 10mm Allen bolts? At the risk of sounding like a complete dork, where are they located? I can't see them.
Thanks,

Splitting the cases
Hello, hoping for some advice. I'm (trying) to split the cases on a 79 SD. I've removed bevel gears, alternator, flywheel, starter gear, etc., etc., and the 9 crankcase bolts. I've read that I need to "sharply tap the left hand end of crank and gearbox shafts with a soft mallet." Doesn't seem to ...

Re: Carbon be gone
Good to know. Thanks for the advice, I will heed that. Will I need to polish clean heads with fine steel wool or the like after? Or will that scratch, etc?

Carbon be gone
Anyone have any advice on the best way to clean carbon off piston heads and inside cylinder heads? Is there a good chemical soak on the market?

Re: Introduction
Hi Bob, I'm doing a complete rebuild on a 79 Darmah. Curious where you got your gaskets and what you paid (I need all top and bottom gaskets).
