I got this bike and the front head was off so when i go to put it on do i have to remove the alternater and line up the marks on the bottom end or is there a way to do it without taking it apart

I have a 75 860 gt there are two numpers side by side on the neck one starts out with DM860S*- - - - - -* the other starts out with DGM*- - - - -

the * is a star

which one is the vin number

oh and on the motor it is 85018 DM 860

what mods were done to this 860? i think it is too far gone to make it stock duel disk front end fiberglass tank loop cut from rear and the side covers??? here are the links oh and dig that paint..
